When PUBLIC RELATIONS PRACTITIONERS raise their voice to address certain issues, they need to bear in mind that social media can help prevent what some communities or individuals are fighting for, and it can also be used to generate violence.

ADVANTAGES OF THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO ADDRESS GENDER BASED VIOLENCE FOR PRPs.


By using social media to address Gender based violence, many people across the world found a way to share personal experiences, and many woman particularly felt cared for. Since GBV is not a national matter but international affecting millions of women including children, social media helped in:

  • Spreading the discontent on the matter worldwide. It helped in reaching targeted audiences and getting the attention of the government getting the attention of the government and public figures who could have positively impact the movement by getting involved and saying a word.  
  •  No result in any form of physical harm.
  • It allowed the involvement of any interested person around the world by simply using the Hashtags and share opinionated comment. Social media then became the voice for victims who had kept silence for ages. See an example of how social media helped woman victims share their personal experience.

From negative feedback to fake news, social media is the perfect example. some disadvantages are:

  •  Some social media users care about visibility and can be up to anything just to grab the audience’s attention. 
  •   Misinformation can pop-up from everywhere in an uncontrolled manner and end up in the PRP find himself in an out-of-hands situation: where does he start from? How and who will believe him at first sight? It becomes ambiguous to the PRP and can require more time for him to analyse the situation and take immediate action to give accurate or trustworthy information. See how social media can light fire or extinguish it in a second. In future:

  •     Public relations should work more on gaining the audience’s trust so that while dealing with sensitive issues and fake news, they become a primary source of accurate information for social media users.
  •      Social media is not only a channel, but should be use strategically based on how accurate different platforms are known for and based on the right target audience.

  2. Thank you for the information and it's really true. Social media for me when it comes to gender based violence as a disadvantage . I am against people who judge someone after the person has been sexually abused . This causes people to commit suicide . I really wish people would change and help each other.
